Tour descriptions

Around Gendarmenmarkt

Right in the heart of Berlin, you find the jewel of the eastern city centre, the Gendarmenmarkt. It’s history goes back to 1701, where it all started. Nowhere is the development of the city of Berlin as present as here. Enjoy the impressive scenery of one of Berlin’s finest squares.

From Gendarmenmarkt we will walk along Friedrichstraße and the famous Boulevard „Unter den Linden“ towards the Brandenburg Gate, the city’s landmark and today symbol of the reunification of Germany and Europe.

Jewish Berlin - Around Rosenthaler Platz

During this approx. 2-hour walk through the Scheunenviertel (Barn Quarter) in the centre of Berlin, you will discover Jewish life in the capital. We will not only look back to the times when Jews were only allowed to enter the city through the Rosenthal and excise was an important source of income for Berlin, but we will also look at Jewish life today and the valuable stimulus that emanates from Berlin’s Jewish community.

On our tour, we will take you to the famous and impressive synagogue in Oranienburger Straße, whose gilded dome is visible from far away. The Jewish secondary school and the story of the famous Jewish philosopher of the Enlightenment, Moses Mendelssohn, who is closely associated with the school, will also find its due place in our tour.

Walk along the wall

The approx. 2-hour walk starts in the famous Mauerpark (Wall Park) Berlin. Today this wide-open park is the “green lungs” of the popular district of Prenzlauer Berg. Especially on weekends, there are scores of artists, buskers and musicians who make the Mauerpark their stage. But the atmosphere here wasn’t always that relaxed. During our walk, which will highlight some of the stark contrasts of this area, we will be moving within the former “death zone” that once brutally separated the eastern and western parts of Berlin. In famous „Bernauer Straße“, where the division of the city was especially dramatic, we will visit the „Kapelle der Versöhnung“ (“Chapel of reconciliation”) as well as the “Berlin Wall Memorial”. You will have the chance to gain an excellent view into the preserved parts of the border fortifications from a viewing platform. Your BTS-guide will attempt to explain to you the brutality with which the division of the city was completed.

BTS dedicate this walk to the memory of Regine Hildebrandt (biologist and politician 1941-2001)
